Canberra Racing Preview: Friday - 18th August 2023

The new Canberra Acton poly surface is playing extra well and we can again expect good competitive racing. There are some promising horses lining up and the featured Federal has attracted some nice gallopers and promises to be evenly fought.

Race 1 (1750m) CL1 SW

POKER DICE was spelled off a big middle-distance win here in this grade and then looked one run short over the mile at the Sapphire Coast on resumption. Fitter for that and draws for a soft run. In the premier local barn and should prove hard to beat. WHO'S IN WINNY (10) rates the threat. Races forward and was run over late here two weeks ago over 1 3⁄16 m by the impressive Heir Jordan. Has a low gate and 7lbs claim today and coming back 0 is sure to take catching. DASHING ELGEE placed distantly in the same contest but was better beaten 1.7L the run before at this track/trip. Draws for a soft run and the 7lbs claimer is aboard today. ALL SO EASY dropped back to a sprint on the same day and as expected didn't get warm. The win and placing at his two priors would see him around the mark.

Race 2 (1080m) Mdn

GUNDY GUY is a 3yo Capitalist gelding on debut for a local barn. He couldn't have been more impressive cruising to an easy trial win at Goulburn. The nice mover looks to have a stack of promise. CHOP THE ICE will have plenty of admirers on her return to the racetrack. Performed well in her initial preparation in Open 2s and was last seen contesting the Group 3 Black Opal. She can use the low barrier and is sure to have come Goes fresh and is feared. LITTLE BE KNOWN found the grade too rich at Wyong but made the placings here prior at this distance. He's had plenty of chances, but Cahill's booking is a positive and he can bounce into a minor spot. LEGRIS is third up and is likely to be better suited over the shorter sprint. Has a soft gate and a positive jockey switch to Heywood replacing for the apprentice. JUST IMAGINE IF debuts for the canny Gardner yard and has the rail and Ward in the saddle. A betting watch.

Race 3 (1750m) BM65

ALMAHERO peaks and was only beaten 1L at Goulburn 11 days ago. Lifts to this journey for the first time and has a key gear switch. She has more to offer and a small claim for an in-form apprentice. BRINGBACKTHEBEARS won here over this distance heavily bet and then came back and tackled 70 level as a 4-5 favourite and after settling last didn't get into Has upside and supporters will be expecting a bounce. TILLMAN comes back in trip and has been busting to win. Missed a whisker at Kempsey two-back and gets in light at this level with the claim atop. On a 7-day return and the blinkers come off. DEPARTING BULLET flopped at Goulburn but the lead-up form stacks Races forward and that will suit around here. She also has a weight dip and is on a 4-day return. TURNAROUND TIME has been racing in better company and forgive the Kembla Grange run his latest. He was a big 65 winner this track/trip four runs back.

Race 4 (1280m) Mdn SW

Competitive. PROPHET TIME (10) missed a whisker at Goulburn and then didn't have the best of it in the straight placing here over this trip behind Ces Soirees Nisbet is reunited and will push forward. Deserves the win and this is suitable. SHERMAN missed a whisker here behind the promising Missile Leader before a plainer effort over longer at the Sapphire Coast. She can bounce back at this track and trip but will need a clever ride from an outside barrier. SEEYA LATER GATER comes out of the Prophet Time race and just beat him home. It was a big effort defying his 12-1 quote. Lightly raced and draws an inside gate today. TEXAS OPEN didn't get into it in the same contest but led here prior beaten Gets Heywood for Nisbet and will be around the mark.

Race 5 (1080m) OPEN - Federal

A competitive Federal. MISS OSTEND was beaten a whisker at Randwick on resumption and had missed 1.2L at Warwick Farm prior. Drew wide last time at Randwick in a 78 and things didn't work out. Peaks now and Cahill is a key jockey booking. Has been briefly freshened and finds a suitable assignment. SISTER MOON resumes and has won 4/4 Delivered in the CL3 at Rosehill before the break. Meets tougher company but is in a top barn and is sure to have come Promising and the betting will tell plenty with her. WHO BUT ROO is going much better than the numerical form suggests. Was only beaten 1.5L here last time in a 70 and has some key gear switches. Has a handy gate and gets in light at this level with a 4lbs claim atop. DEEP SNOW can fire third-up for the new barn off a freshen-up. He has city form that stacks right up and is in well with the 7lbs claim.

Race 6 (1080m) BM 55

INSANE VOLT resumed with a narrow defeat here behind Prometio Mas and then came back and delivered a dominant Maiden win bet even-money. A wide gate has to be managed today but he's a promising galloper who can win better races. CASH IS QUEEN resumed a firm favourite at Moruya but was untested by the rider in the latter stages. No issues were found, and she's trialled since. Her form last preparation reads extra well she was a Goulburn 58 winner at her only second-up start. Has a 9lbs claim and fitter she's a threat. TITAN STAR has been threatening all campaign and this is much easier than the 64 at Kembla Grange when beaten just Has to be kept safe. PROMETIO MAS won here Maiden here as expected and then settled too far back at the Sapphire Coast beaten 2.7L. That was in a CL2 and a 55 is a more suitable assignment. Expect her to race forward today from the low barrier.

Race 7 (1280m) CL1

Race 7 (1280m) CL1

MISSILE LEADER resumed here heavily bet and delivered the Maiden. Powered home in that and again the one after when he couldn't quite catch Calmer Karma. Finally draws a low gate and no surprise if he settles closer today. He's in the right yard and is promising. CHASING A QUID didn't have the best of it in the same contest and best to assess on the comfortable Maiden win (first-up) when he led. Draws inside and has more to offer. QUINLAN led first-up and belted the Corowa Maidens by 7.5L. He's substantially improved and will lead or box-seat from the rails gate. He can keep building. CES SOIREES LA presents third up and brings a 2.8L Maiden win achieved at this circuit. Gets in light with a 7lbs claim and has upside. An outside gate makes the job trickier this time.
