NEWS PREVIEW

Canberra Racing Preview – Friday, 3rd August 2023

They race on the new Canberra Acton poly for the third time and the track has delivered, providing a fair racing surface. You can win from the front or back and most of the races today are competitive affairs.

Race 1

BRINGBACKTHEBEARS won his Maiden at Moruya first up finishing powerfully from the back. Followed that with an equally impressive win at this track/trip bet into a 5-4 favourite. Fitter again and has weight relief in stronger grade. He can take the next step for the premier Dryden barn. Stablemate TROOPER KNUCKLE is also a player. He's been racing well at this level and should be ready for the longer journey. Martin rides for Innes who sticks with the above.  BLAZING SUNRISE took threatening efforts to Nowra and was disappointing. He's won and placed his only two starts at this distance and is hard-fit. Has an inside barrier and a sizable weight drop. Ditto STREET CRED found more like his best when beaten 2L at Goulburn over the mile. Third-up now and will race forward. In a canny barn and should be ready. WICHITA WARRIOR is the third Dryden runner and could win without surprising.

Race 2

INSANE VOLT raced at Group level three-back on debut and had the one run last preparation and didn't come Resumed here two weeks ago and just came up short, after stalking the leader. It was an impressive return to the racetrack. He will use the rail and will be fitter. Ready to deliver on his potential.  MAN OF MINE resumed here and needed the run. He was much better at Moruya after that and won't have to be much improved to get make the finish. SASS 'N' CHEEK debuted at Goulburn and was only beaten 2.6L. Bensley's booking interests and she will go well with that run under the belt. DEEPHAR impressed on debut but has disappointed the two since. Has a low barrier today and comes back to the shorter sprint after a month away. Keep onside.

Race 3

Tricky and doubt there's much between the better ones. HEIR JORDAN has been racing on south coast tracks in good fashion, but he settles well off the pace and makes it tough for himself. We've seen plenty of examples of back runners powering home to win here and the extra 1 1⁄2 f is sure to suit. Has the rail and that needs managing. WHO'S IN WINNY will control the race. Has been racing over middle distances in stronger provincial company and should prove hard to peg back. AUSTRALIAN CITIZEN will be more competitive than the numerical form suggests. Made good improvement to be beaten 2L at Gosford last start over a mile and didn't have the best of DASHING ELGEE placed here this trip and can build on that. The local is sure to have admirers.

Race 4

Tough. EVER WAS was a comfortable Newcastle Maiden winner three starts ago and has been plainer the two since. He's good enough and may appreciate the poly surface and the extra metres. Worth another chance. WOULD BE KING raced forward winning the 66 at Wagga over 1 1⁄4 m and then was beaten 2L there in stronger than this. Owen goes on and he draws for the run of the race. Has been performing on wet tracks but doubt they'd be here if they didn't think it would suit. SUPER RIFF powered home here over a sprint to miss a nose and impressed. Steps out to this trip for the first time and that's the query. He's in a sharp local barn that knows what it's doing. STREET CRED is also third-up and a dual acceptor. Was beaten two lengths at Goulburn over a mile and will be better for Has the handy 4lbs claim and is also a chance.

Race 5

PROPHET TIME (12) took a sit and showed much better form when narrowly beaten at Goulburn. The local draws for a soft run and will get every chance to go one better. TEXAS OPEN led beaten 1L here behind Missile Leader turning the form around. Nisbet gets off the above to stick and if he holds that form, he will be right in CES SOIREES LA trialled well at Warwick Farm and didn't have the best of it there on debut starting at long odds. He will have taken fitness and learning, and this will suit him much better. PROUD GEORGE peaks and is showing enough to make the trifecta/first four.

Race 6

VAAROOM is in the premier local stable. Has talent but has been hard to catch. He's needed both starts this preparation and pulled up with an issue 18 days ago. The tongue control and lugging bit are applied for the first time, and he has weight relief at this level. He can secure the run of the race and tipping quick improvement. FRISSON led and won the 70 on the same day spiking his figures. He'll carry 10lbs more with Matt Cahill staying aboard instead of a switch to a claimer. He's sure to give a sight. DEVINE MISS continues to race well without winning. The losing sequence is stretching out but she's suited and a 4lbs claimer goes aboard today. SHE'S BOOMING is third-up and has switched from a Melbourne barn on a 23-day turnaround. She's been racing in better metropolitan company and the winkers are applied again. Is good enough and the race-day market will tell plenty.

Race 7

A good contest. MISSILE LEADER resumed her heavily bet and stormed home from the back winning the Maiden. Fitter now and the promising galloper can repeat the dose. ASTUNNER was quickly back to form narrowly beaten here behind Light Press. He has more to give and will get every chance from the low gate. HURRICANE ABLOWING ran a strong relative figure on debut when narrowly beaten here on the turf. Resumed at Goulburn beaten 2L and it was a tough effort from the back. Will be better for that. Draws wide but get-back gallopers get their chance on this track. Owen's booking is a positive. CHASING A QUID was a comfortable Maiden winner first-up and the local can build on that.
