Best From The West: Ascot – 26th March 2022

It is classic season out west with the WA Oaks on this week and the Derby to come.

In the fillies feature, we like the way Mrs America reacted to being asked to sit much closer in the Natasha Stakes.

From there she ground away into third but was not beaten far and, importantly, now gets to the mile and a half.

Her breeding suggests she wants every bit of that and would have been primed to peak on this day. The owners and stable are giddy counting the number of Oaks' they've won.

She hasn't been much of a winner but this seems exactly what she needs and we're getting a nice price to find out.

The other good race is the Melvista Stakes for the boys leading into the WATC Derby and it has horses in form everywhere.

Multiple runners have had winning streaks in recent starts so the betting here will be interesting.

Some of the favoured runners are drawn wide from this slightly tricky start so there is potential for an upset.

Pale Rider ran a good race in a Fairetha in the Spring and later showed the 1 1⁄4 m was no hurdle when a close second.

Both efforts from a break have been excellent with the most recent seeing him coming from near last to win.

With another 2 f and hopefully a decent run in transit, he can stamp himself as a Derby contender.
