Caulfield - Race 5: Frankie Pinot

One that caught the eye and should be added to the blackbook is Tony and Calvin McEvoy-trained gelding Frankie Pinot. Not finishing out of the top two in his five runs this preparation, the son of Your Song was restrained from his wide barrier to settle toward the tail of the field on the inside. Looking to take off prior to straightening under the riding of Luke Currie, the pair got majorly held up in traffic and were unable to get clear until passing the 0. When out, the five-year-old let down forcefully, taking significant ground off his rivals in a savage attack toward the line. Falling 0.5L short of the winner, Frankie Pinot will be greatly benefited by a bigger track in proceeding runs – hopefully a suitable race at Flemington will give him a great winning chance.

Warwick Farm - Race 1: Espiona

One to keep an eye on from Wednesday's Warwick Farm meeting is Chris Waller-trained filly Espiona. After three encouraging trials, this Extreme Choice filly was strongly fancied by the market ($1.45) on debut over 6 f. Having not shown a great deal of early speed in her trials, the three-year-old bundled the start and was a clear last when leaving the gates. Drawn the inside, the filly was able to kick-up and better her position under the riding of James McDonald. Quietly ridden when straightening, McDonald was given the perfect split and quickly joined in at the front. When popped the question at the 1 f, the filly put pay to her opponents before being eased down over the final 0 to score softly by 3.5L. Espiona's win was won of promise, and she looks destined for greater things in the future. With Waller nominating the filly for the Bondi Stakes (Oct 23 – 1 m), it is clear that he has a good opinion of her and is one that is well worth following.
