The Melbourne Mail: Flemington - 25th April 2020

The St Leger is the highlight on Flemington's Anzac Day card and it's an interesting edition of the time honoured race.

Honoured by time it may the Leger has lost it's place as a stepping stone for Melbourne Cup horses in recent years. But it does remain an interesting race and invariably a good betting race for the second (perhaps fourth...) tier three-year-old stayers and that is what it looks like this year.

Our bet of the day comes up in the race with the local lead up looking slightly overrated in early markets in our humble. Those off the Derby in Sydney look a little bit better than the locals and are fancied to take it out.

Those Derby horses are Sacramento and Chains Of Honour - for the sake of the article we will throw up Sacramento as the bet, but backing both seems a reasonable option at the prices on offer.

Sacramento went out and set up a true staying test in the Derby and stuck to his guns admirably in the circumstance. Gai has won four of the past seven runnings of the Leger with horses off a similar type and, assuming that the tough Derby run hasn't left a mark, Sacramento can make if five of the past eight and the last three to go the way of Tulloch Lodge.

For an each way play we roll on to the last where plenty come through the race won by Kentucky Breeze at Caulfield two weeks ago.

Super Titus was the run of the race by our read of things and while the barrier may leave him facing a tough ask again, the early odds don't do him justice and he seems a good gamble around the $9 mark.

Bet Of The Day: Race 6 #4 Sacramento @ $5.00

Each Way Play: Race 8 #7 Super Titus @ $9.00
