Weight proves key to Raqeeq Brisbane win

Sydney visitor Raqeeq made the most of a big drop in weights from his previous start to score an easy win at Eagle Farm.

Sydney visitor Raqeeq confirmed his rating as the best-weighted horse at Eagle Farm with a strong win.

Raqeeq ($4) got home strongly along the rails to beat Ruby Guru ($17) by 1-1/4 lengths with a short head to Art Attack  ($17) in third in the Events @ BRC Handicap (2200m).

The gelding won his previous start carrying 131lbs at Canterbury in Sydney and dropped to 119lbs on Saturday.

Raqeeq is one of many stayers champion trainer Chris Waller has got from Europe having run his early races in France.

The now six-year-old has now won four races in Australia and is getting better with age.

Stable foreman Brett Killion said Raqeeq wasn't up to top-class but was suited in Brisbane races.

"He was very well placed at the weights and he did get the run of the race," he said.

"Chris likes to assess the races before deciding whether horses like Raqeeq stay here or head back to Sydney."
