Brisbane Best: Doomben – 14th September 2019

Trainer Tony Gollan may be launching his Melbourne spring assault on Saturday but will still have a big home team stepping out at Doomben.

He has several good chances on the program but the best could be Galtero in the day's opener, the Gadens Benchmark 85 Handicap over 2000m.

The five-year-old comes off a luckless run three weeks ago when he was forced to race wide and didn't have a lot of room in the straight but didn't shirk his task.

He is drawn to get a much better run in transit this week and had impressed two back with a strong 2.3 length win over a mile.

Galtero steps up in distance but is proven at the trip and has put together a good record at Doomben.

He meets a field without a lot of depth and with better fortune has the ratings to win.

In–form mare Veranes gets her chance to record back-to-back wins when she lines up in the Rostron Carlyle Rojas Class 3 for fillies and mares over 1200m.

The Chris Waller-trained four-year-old comes off an impressive win at Eagle Farm a fortnight ago when she ran on strongly for a narrow win over this distance.

Veranes was a little wayward when shifting out there so Waller has applied the blinkers on Saturday, a move that could improve her further.

She has the best last-start Timeform figure in this field and will be at peak fitness fourth up from a spell.

The mare is drawn to get a cushy run from the rails fence and while Robbie Fradd will need to find here some space in the straight she should be hitting the line strongly with clear running.

BET OF THE DAY: Race 1 #5 Galtero @ $3.00

EACH WAY PLAY: Race 6 #15 Veranes @ $6.50
