Humidor top-weighted NZ-bred; Top mare Bonneval in Caulfield Cup with 52.5kg; Shinn booked for Chocante; Stakes performer for Wrote; Vale Kelly Thompson
Humidor top-weighted NZ-bred
The former Johno Benner and Hollie Wynyard-trained Humidor is the highest-weighted New Zealand-bred in this year’s Gr.1 Melbourne Cup.
Now in Darren Weir’s stable, the Gr.1 Australian Cup winner was allotted 123lbs behind the topweight Order Of St George on 128lbs. Last year’s Cup winner Almandin was allotted 124lbs, a 10lbs rise on the 114lbs he carried to victory last November.
The Stephen Autridge and Jamie Richards-prepared dual Group One winner Gingernuts has 121lbs while Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman’s Gr.1 ATC Derby winner Jon Snow has 120lbs. His dual Oaks-winning stablemate Bonneval has 116lbs.
Past placegetter Who Shot Thebarman received 119lbs, a kilo more than Stephen Marsh’s Gr.2 Brisbane Cup winner Chocante.
Top mare Bonneval in Caulfield Cup with 52.5kg
Dual Oaks winner Bonneval has been given 116lbs in this year’s Gr.1 Caulfield Cup.
It is the same weight carried to victory by last year’s winner Jameka, a four-year-old mare with a similar profile.
Trained by Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman, Bonneval opened her spring campaign in sizzling style last Saturday when she won the Gr.2 Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes. Bonneval’s stablemate Jon Snow has 120lbs in the Caulfield feature while Lizzie L’Amour has 113lbs.
Te Akau’s Gingernuts, dual Group One winner of the New Zealand Derby and Rosehill Guineas, has been allotted 121lbs, the Stephen Marsh-trained Chocante has 117lbs and barn mate Sofia Rosa has been given 114lbs.
The Caulfield Cup weights are headed by Hartnell on 128lbs.
Shinn booked for Chocante
In-form New Zealand stayer Chocante will have a change of rider at Randwick on Saturday.
The son of Shocking will be partnered by Blake Shinn in the Gr.2 Kingston Town Stakes and trainer Stephen Marsh is hoping the top Sydney jockey will also take the mount in the Gr.1 The Metropolitan on September
Chocante won the Gr.2 Brisbane Cup in June and in his only start since he finished third behind Winx in the Gr.2 Chelmsford Stakes with former champion New Zealand apprentice Rory Hutchings in the saddle.
Stakes performer for Wrote
New Highview Stud stallion Wrote has struck a black type blow in the United States.
His son High Providence, a colt from the sire’s first Northern Hemisphere crop, came off a debut victory to finish runner-up at the weekend in the Listed Sunday Silence Stakes over a mile at Louisiana Downs.
By High Chaparral, Wrote was the Group One winner of the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf.
Vale Kelly Thompson
Stakes-winning trainer Kelly Thompson died in Invercargill on Monday. He was
He prepared more than 270 winners with his career highlight the 1996 victory of Old Thymer in the New Zealand Cup, then a Group Two contest.
Thompson also won the Grand National Hurdles with Jack Dugan, the Grand National Steeplechase with Black Rhythm and the Stewards’ with Ima Royal.
Another top galloper he trained was Judge Obadiah, the winner of 23 races.
