The Melbourne Mail - September 2

The first Group 1 of the season has arrived and the Memsie Stakes has stepped up and delivered an interesting betting contest.
Like so many of his stablemates on the card Vega Magic finds himself at the head of betting and with good reason.
The Goodwood winner was even better when returning in the Regal Roller and that performance points to him being more than up to the challenge that the Memsie Stakes throws
In the Memsie he comes head to head with a couple of multiple Group One-winning stars in Black Heart Bart and Le Romain and the big C.Vs that they bring to the race certainly look ominous but on recent form this is a lopsided fight.
Vega Magic posted a figure in the Regal Roller that says he is every bit up to the challenge. A Timeform rating of 122p is backed up by a speed figure of 118, and the way that time was achieved is what bodes really well for him coming up against the top liners.
The speed rating of 118 is just another way of representing the overall time of 70.04 seconds adjusted for the conditions. Split down the middle that 70.04 was achieved in halves of 34.31 and 35.73.
The time was all set up in the first half and the second half was relatively slow. Too slow to optimise that overall time in fact and it points to Vega Magic being capable of running to something like 124-125 in a more evenly run contest.
Both Black Heart Bart and Le Romain can be expected to spike on their pedestrian first up runs but they won't get away with anything short of their best if Vega Magic can run to the level that his last start hints towards.
Charmed Harmony looks the ideal tow truck for Vega Magic to achieve this level and that makes his current quote start to look more appealing than it probably does at first glance. In fact, we're keen and all this equates to him being a bet at prices better than $2.25.
For an each way play we will look at a really competitive Heatherlie and the resuming Ventura Storm - another key runner on they day for Lindsay Park.
He will almost certainly be short of his best but he's good enough at this stage to be considered a Cups contender. He can go one of two ways from this point of course - he can land in a Ballarat Cup or a Melbourne Cup, we're hoping the latter.

Bet Of The Day: Race 7 #5 Vega Magic @ $2.25
Each Way Play: Race 8 #1 Ventura Storm @ $11.00
